Saving lives - Now with solar energy
Until 2019, Katate Health Center (KHC) in Kanungu District, Uganda could not perform any cesarean due to the lack of an operation theater. Even for basic life saving operations like hernia and appendicitis, people had to travel to the next district, many of them being poor and unable to bear the costs. Then an operation theater was built and a solar system was installed to power the operation theater.
Approximately 70% of the medical devices in these developing countries fail due to poor power quality. So it was crucial to power these appliances. Moreover it was equally important to save them from failing.
BOS installed a solar system with lithium batteries, enough to cover the needs of the health center. The diesel genset on the premises was integrated into the new solar system, to support the system during bad weather days.
KHC treated about 1800 people on average per month, delivered 80-100 babies (around 20% C-Section), performed 2-4 major surgeries, and 8-10 minor surgeries. In addition, their list of healthcare services is expanding, with new machines installed every now and then. When refrigerations were available in March 2021 it was possible to start vaccinations against Covid-19 in this region of Uganda.
The potential of energy in healthcare is simply enormous and we are unlocking it together with our partners one healthcare center at a time.
