BOS Hybrid DC is a Lithium ion (LiFePO4) based Solar home system that can be either powered in pure Lithium mode or extended with inexpensive lead acid batteries. BOS HS250 and HS500 are invertless DC Solar home systems which comes with integrated lithium (LiFePO4) batteries. The system comes with a build in charge regulator which manages both lithium and lead acid batteries in an intelligent way and makes the sytem very efficient compared to a solar AC system.

DC Solar home systems are very efficient together with highly efficient DC appliances. This efficiency gain reflects in to required size of solar panel and battery capacity getting smaller and therefore cost-savings when compared to a solar-AC system. For homes in off-grid, rural and places with frequent power cuts, DC solar home systems offer a great solution being affordable and economical.

Hybrid systems are well engineered, very compact with rugged design and housed in an IP65 industrial power cabinet, the installation can be ground or wall mounted. They can be customized for special purposes and are perfectly suited for rough conditions such as energy infrastructure along streets, humid areas or public places. The hybrid systems can be used to upgrade different types of lead acid systems which is done by simply replacing old charge controller, promising lowest efforts and costs of upgrading.

The BOS hybrid system is the central unit in the solar home system. It comes with integrated lithium (LiFePO4) batteries. The hybrid system contains a combined, fully featured charge controller for lithium and lead acid batteries that manages the state of charge of both batteries in an intelligent way.

An excess energy output is only switched on, if excess power is available. This helps to run fans, chargers or other high power devices only if there is enough energy. It automatically keeps enough energy for devices that need to be available 24/7. All hybrid systems come with an integrated USB port.

BOS hybrid systems work with AGM, gel and standard lead acid batteries. Already existing batteries can be used as well. The state of charge of the lead acid battery is controlled in an intelligent way and includes all relevant protection and performance features.

Lithium battery and hybrid charge controller are one unit. A lead acid battery, the solar generator and different loads are simply connected to the BOS hybrid systems using standard wire connectors. There is no need to configure any lithium battery parameters by the customer.

Lithium Performance at lead acid costs

Lead acid batteries are cheaper to source but often fail within 2-3 years, as batteries get damaged by continuous operation at low states of charge. Expensive lithium systems perform well in such conditions and show longer lifetimes. BOS hybrid systems combine the advantages of both these battery technologies. Initial investment costs for BOS hybrid systems are close to the costs of pure lead acid systems and approximately 50% lower than pure lithium systems. The costs per stored kWh in hybrid systems are around 60% lower than in lead acid systems, this makes hybrid systems the most cost-effective option within the first 3 years.

Our Lithium Extension Battery is a fully scalable solution to enhance performance and add capacity to lead acid batteries in solar and any other kind of energy storage systems. It comes in a robust housing and can be used with new or existing 12 V lead acid batteries. The intelligent technology allows multiple LE modules to be stacked in parallel to meet your specific system specs.

Like in all BOS AG Hybrid battery systems, the lithium battery takes most of the charging cycles while the lead acid battery provides inexpensive backup capacity. The lead acid battery is charged with higher priority, while the lithium battery takes all surplus energy. This process helps to increase the lead acid battery lifetime.

The integrated battery management system recognizes the lead acid battery voltage and automatically starts to support the lead acid battery. Lithium battery powers most of the loads, while lead acid is kept at floating point most of the time. However, bigger loads are supported by lead acid and the lithium battery simultaneously, which results smaller currents for each battery, reducing the strain on both the batteries.

In pure lead acid systems, batteries often fail within one to three years, as batteries get damaged by continuous operation at low state of charge. Pure lithium systems perform way better and show longer lifetimes but are very expensive. Initial investment costs for hybrid systems are close to the costs of pure lead acid systems and approx. 50% lower than pure lithium systems. As costs per stored kWh are around 60% lower in hybrid systems than in lead acid systems, the hybrid system becomes the most cost effective option already in the first three years.

 

Longer battery lifetime

The lead acid battery is not strained by deep charging cycles, as the lithium battery is used for running daily cycles. During its long hours at full state of charge the lead acid battery is floated. Compared to pure lead acid systems both effects positively impact the lead acid battery lifetime. By preventing harmful sulphation, the lifetime can be increased to more than 10 years. This lowers the operating cost of energy storage significantly and has a positive impact on the environment. The lithium battery offers enough charging cycles for more than 10 years of daily use. The lithium battery furthermore recharges the lead acid battery in case that it didn't get fully charged during the day, a case which frequently happens in solar applications.

DC Grids are the most efficient and cost-effective option for rural energy access at locations with high building density and for residential homes with rented out rooms. For setting up a smart DC-grid, two components are needed (next to a solar home system as central energy hub), a power meter PM10 at each household and a grid signal transmitter PT20 at each energy hub. The PT20 is already included into the central energy hub which combines DC Hybrid Storage and PT20 in one system. Both housings are water and dust resistant.

A central energy station, equipped with a solar home system and the BOS PT grid signal transmitter forms the central unit of a SMART DC Grid. The central energy station can be any 12 VDC lead acid solar home system, hybrid systems from BOS are recommended.

3 Grafik INTELLIGENT POWER TARIFFS
Each household or power meter is preconfigured with a particular amount of energy per day according to their requirements and loads. We call this energy quota; the user is not supposed to exceed this energy quota as this will create disturbances and destroy the resilience of the minigrid. Hence the loads are switched off automatically once the user finishes this energy quota, so that the neighbours don’t have to suffer!

The smart communication between PT20 and PM10 enables to have variable tariffs depending on the status of grid; very cheap during times of excess energy, less expensive during daytime and more expensive during night time. 

 

4 Grafik INTELLIGENT LOAD MANAGEMENT
The SMART DC grid switches excess energy loads and emergency lights automatically. Once the state of charge of the DC grid reaches full level, each meter automatically switches on a separate excess energy load output. This excess energy output powers big loads only during times of excess energy when tariffs are cheap, hence households optimize their energy costs. Once the state of charge of the DC grid reaches a low level, all loads are automatically disconnected. If users finish their daily energy quota, they can still use an emergency light.
