BOS AG (Balance of Storage Systems AG) are a supplier of products and services for off-grid energy solutions. Based in Neu-Ulm near Munich in Germany and founded in 2014, the aim of this young company is to become a leader in decentralised energy supply. Their focus is on Li-Pb (lithium-lead) hybrid charging technology for solar systems which support intelligent load management. As BOS use Victron Energy products in their systems it was good to hear from one of their staff and to gain insight into how Victron products are integrated into their solutions. The passionate sailor Peter Reinmann extended his lead acid energy storage of his 9.30 meter long sailing catamaran with two BOS LiFePO4 Lithium modules. Peter is thus able to operate all the on-board electronics such as navigation, radio, light, refrigerator and gas heating. Because there was no room under the bench seat for a larger supply battery, a LE300 hybrid system was the perfect solution without loosing too much space. Now he is able to enjoy longer trips on the water without returning for recharge. A freedom that he no longer wants to miss.
Driving from Lake Constance, over Russia to the North Cape and back, was a special experience for our BOS Electronic Developer Lars and his team Schwabenstahl Volvo Power. With temperatures down to -27°C the Baltic Sea Circle Winter Edition was probably the coldest rally in the world. Additionally, being on road with more than 20 years old Volvos, without any GPS and no highways allowed, the rally had his challenges. For 16 days the cars became their chosen transport and homes. But especially at this trip, there was not completely everything old fashioned.
The remote island of Kenti is a hub of fisheries export. The only available power access on the island was from a diesel genset. Since diesel runs for four hours per day, cold storing was almost impossible. In 2017 after a World Bank investment, a solar-diesel mini grid was built. However, power capacity was soon not enough. So, BOS AG supplemented the lead-acid mini grid with BOS lithium storage systems into a hybrid solution. Today, with its extended capacity and a whole optimized system, the diesel generator is used only as a bad-weather backup and 340 households are supplied with electricity around the clock.
6th of September a group of around 20 people from Central America and the Dominican Republic visited our company. The whole event was organized by the Renewables Academy (RENAC) AG in cooperation with the German-Central America/Caribbean Chamber of Commerce (GTCC). Focusing on the topic “Decentralized Energy Supply with Renewable Energy with a focus on Storage Technology in Germany”, we were happy to present our business model and newest product developments.

The existing health station of Kanungu was in a very poor condition. Simple birth complications, fractures, and infectious diseases often led to death. A state-private initiative turned it into a fully functioning
hospital. Thanks to our energy storage systems, all necessary loads can be handled, especially for operations like autoclave, vacuum pumps, electrosurgical
cutters, anesthesia equipment, and surgical lights. For secure energy supply, BOS energy systems combine electricity
from solar energy, the main power grid, and a diesel generator. This project shows that even in remote areas a very
high medical level is possible.
The target is to electrify twelve markets by 2019 equipped with BOS Systems. As part of this project, 450 stores in the Iponri market in Lagos now benefit from a renewable and stable power supply. Businesses are mainly souvenir shops, electronic products, tailoring, financial and printing services. With remote monitoring functions, all important system information and energy consumption can be read. PAYG makes it possible for
customers to book their current
contracts in advance on there mobile phone or in the service center. The prices for the shop owner are well below the costs of the old diesel generators.
Sabon Gari market has been often in the headlines because of big fires, that destroyed large parts of the market. The root cause was the usage of many diesel generators. The Nigerian government and various companies have jointly come up with a solution. Equipped with the BOS Systems all 12,000 shops receive green, stable and affordable power for lamps, fans, television, computer and mobile phones. More markets have followed.

INDIA | Together with the German Energy Agency (dena) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), a renewable energy solution project was initiated in 2017 in India in order to electrify a village with limited access to the existing grid.
The selected village in Uttar Pradesh has approximately 100 households. Thanks to the intelligent DC mini grid and renewable electricity produced using photovoltaic modules, the households’ basic electrification needs could be covered and the village’s water supply improved with solar pump systems. At the same time, investment costs stayed low, as highly efficient DC loads (such as LED lamps and low power consumption fans) require smaller solar systems.
With the support of our local partner Oorja to operate the grid service, training and maintenance work are guaranteed. The entire system is designed to deliver affordable, reliable and sustainable electricity for ten years.
